Baby and Family Photography Session/ Greensboro

We have had the privilege of working with the Cornett family on several occasions. Their beautiful daughter Macey has been one of our favorites to photograph. We were so excited to get the call from Kelly to photograph their family on location in their home in Greensboro. They now have a new addition to the family and his name is Drew. He is such a beautiful baby! Babies so amazing and what little blessings they are! I could gaze at babies for hours and then I always wonder....how will their little eyes view the world, their hands....will they be rough and scarred from athletics or physical labor or will they be soft and supple like the hands of a surgeon? Where will their feet take them? Will they work in a mission field or will their feet be the first to stand on a recently discovered planet? Could this little one be the one that finds a cure for a disease or will he defend and preserve the law. Who could know what the future holds for this little life? As I look even deeper into this child's eyes another question enters my mind..... Am I doing all I can to leave this world a better place for him?

Photo Trip

Last Friday morning at about 10:00am Bill, Wynn, Bill, and I pulled out of town on our annual photo trip. Last year our trip took us east to Shackleford Banks. This year we decided to head southwest to the small town of Walhalla SC to photograph waterfalls and landscapes. We knew as we left town that we could have probably picked a better weekend for outdoor photography. We refused to let the weather forecast dampen our spirits. Before we reached Charlotte it began to rain and it rained constantly the entire weekend. It's a real challenge to photograph in heavy rain with digital cameras but even so I think came back with some good stuff. We found an old abandoned warehouse and spent an afternoon photographing each other in different kinds of light. It was fun sharing our thoughts with each other and watching the way each of us created our on vision. We all make our living as photographers but to me this is the crux of the matter.......we were four different photographers looking at the same thing and each of us saw it differently. There was no right way or no wrong way just a different way. To me that is the heart of photography.... having your own vision and having the willingness to share that vision with others.

Old Salem Engagement Session

I love to do engagement sessions! They are so much fun and it gives me a chance to get to know a couple a little better. This past weekend was no exception. Ashley and Brandon's session was great! We spent the afternoon in Old Salem (really love the nostalgia there-very cool place). Bella, Ashley and Brandon's puppy, joined us for part of the engagement session too. Check out some of our favorites.

Photography Classes

I love sharing my passion for photography with others; fellow photographers, high school seniors, college kids, etc.... anyone with an interest in photography. That being said, we are offering a photography workshop where I will teaching an intro to digital photography.

Whether you have been a photographer for decades or have just picked up your first camera, the basics are always good to review. In the workshop you will learn about:

Snow Day

We don't get a lot of snow down south but when we do we all like to celebrate. Schools close and folks stay at home rather than venture out to work. Men with high levels of testosterone like to get out and show off their snow driving skills. They usually end up in a ditch where another man with even higher levels of testosterone is more than willing to pull them out with their new and untested four wheel drive.

We had a sleep-over at our house the night it snowed with Tyler, Madison, and Bradyn. We all slept on the floor wrapped in sleeping bags and blankets. I woke up at 2am feeling like I had been ran over by a train. I found my way back to my bed and there I stayed for the remainder of the night. The kids of course were up bright and early ready to go out and play in the fresh fallen snow. Karen made us a nice breakfast we ate, got dressed, and played in the snow until it melted. Our dog, Beau, enjoyed the snow as much as we did!

I love the south and "I'm prouder than a game rooster" to live here. I'm glad we all have enough kid in us to act so silly over a little dusting of snow.

Good Times!

Jack is Back

Jack is back and better than ever! I am so excited about the return of my favorite show 24! I wondered at first if I would have the same enthusiasm for it. It only took about two minutes and and I was hooked again. I've been trying to figure out why I like the program so much. I guess it's because I am a non-conformist too, albeit on a much smaller scale. I really liked how he handled the the senator.

We shot our final wedding of 2008 in Raleigh NC on December 27th. Everything went wonderfully. Congratulations to Brad and Pam and thanks for letting us be there on your very special day!

New Stuff On The Horizon

Happy New Year! We hope each and every one of you had a wonderful Christmas. Ours was awesome with time spent with family and friends. We've been away from our blog for a few weeks mainly because Karen and I are working hard on some projects for the new year. There has been quite a bit of talk/excitement in the photo industry as of late concerning the Canon 5D and the Nikon D90 and their ability to record movies. I personally have a few thoughts on the matter, which I won't speak of at this point. I do however, think it's a good thing and, if done properly, will be a big hit with many couples.

There is another thing that is gaining a lot of steam out on the west coast which has really peaked our interest. That is the fusion of Super 8 film and still photography. We love the retro look of cinema film! So, we recently purchased a Super 8 camera (Canon 814) and are experimenting with it now. If you are a bride or groom with interest in Super 8 film give us a call or e-mail. We would love to talk to you about it and may even have a great deal for you.

It has been a very good year at Autumn Song. We want to thank each and every person that helped make it so; whether it was your business, your friendship or both....thank you. We look forward to a challenging but great 2009. We plan to keep dreaming and to keep reaching, to try new things with different approaches so that we may stay fresh in our love for the art of wedding and portraiture photography.

Finally, just a few photos of one our our favorites.....Avery.

An Asheville Wedding

I recently had the opportunity to be a second shooter at a wedding in Asheville,NC. It was something I really enjoyed doing. A beautiful wedding with a very lovely couple...everything was perfect, even the weather. The thing I enjoyed most was the opportunity to lay back and shoot beautiful moments as the happened, not to direct but to be a silent observer. It was also a pleasure to work with one of my best friends and photography confidant Richard Israel. He worked with me on a wedding last year and returned the favor by allowing me to tag along with him on a wedding. Richard is an awesome photographer whose work I see as being very real and honest. We are currently making plans to work together as a team, hopefully getting something going soon!

Photographing The Kids

I take a lot of pictures of Bradyn and Layla. It has been a commitment I made to photograph them at least once a month. I really enjoy doing it. It has been so much fun watching them change; seeing through the lens of my camera allows me to see closer, deeper and with a lot of emotion. I love the way Layla looks, especially in the fall of the year. Her beautiful red hair and that great big smile fit the season perfectly, but honestly, fits any time of the year or month or week! Her mother does a great job dressing her too. As I look into their eyes from behind the camera and see the honesty and innocence, I pray that I do my part in making a difference in their lives and in the world in which they live.

Our Operation Smile Campaign

Our campaign, October Family Portrait Month, to benefit Operation Smile was awesome! The response was great and we have had so much fun meeting new families. Thanks for your support to benefit a worthy cause and thanks for choosing Autumn Song to document this time in the lives of your families. We are already looking forward to participating next October to benefit Operation Smile. For those of you who would like to make a personal contribution to OS you can do so by going to: www.operationsmile.org

You know how much energy a four year old can have, especially four year old boys. Well, I just did a session with triplet four year old boys. They were so much fun to watch and to photograph. Here are a few of my favorites from the session.

We recently photographed a wedding in High Point and were so honored to be there. We know the bride's parents, Dr. & Ivey Orr, and respect them greatly. Mary Louise and Brad, we wish you guys the very best!

Blair and Harold are getting married next spring. We just did their engagement session and I really had a good time with them.

Calvin is 20 months old now. We did his first pics when he was around 3 months old. He has changed so much! Calvin is a very active and talkative boy and was so much fun to photograph. I could have followed him around for hours taking pictures.

The Rollins family is very special to us. Beth has been one of our daughter's best friends since middle school and we have known Beth and Matt's parents for many, many years. We love this family and were so happy to do some photos with the new addition to their family, Levi.

Variety.....The Spice of Life

It has been said before that variety is the spice of life. I really have to agree with that statement especially when it comes to photography. October has been a fantastic month for us. We've had a variety of assignments including some aerial photography for a local high school and also photographed an event for HOUSE BEAUTIFUL, a national design magazine. These two assignments, three weddings, and some sessions with families and children have really kept the cameras clicking. I have also had the privilege of being a mentor to a local high school student. This has been the second year I have been asked to be a mentor and I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing my love for photography with these students. It not only gives me the opportunity to teach but also restores my confidence and faith in young people.

A few months ago we posted some pics of Dane and Jamie's engagement session. They got married this month and here are just a few of our favorites from their wedding.

Yates and Heather's wedding was at Revolution Mill in Greensboro. What a neat place! Heather and Yates were surrounded by close friends and family and everyone had a blast.

The aerial photography was for the girl's softball coach at North Davidson High School. What an awesome field! Mike Lambros has been a very successful softball coach at North and we are so proud of him, he is our brother-in-law.

Eric and Maria had a private ceremony at Childress Vineyards. There was such beauty and intimacy in the simplicity of their wedding.

Kids definitely add spice to life! We did a session with the Brinkley family and here are some pics of Jackson and Sawyer.

Our benefit for Operation Smile is going well. Thanks for your support!

Bradyn and Beau

I posted some photos of Bradyn and Beau a few weeks ago and since then a lot of folks have been asking about Beau. Beau, just to bring you up to date is our new puppy. He is a beautiful Golden Retriever with tons of personality. It's a real riot watching Beau and Bradyn play together. I have never seen a little boy and a dog with so much in common. Please allow me to share just a few of my observations.... 1. They both love to play. Bradyn walks through the door and the first words out of his mouth are "let's play Papa." When I let Beau out he attacks Bradyn and they wrestle for at least an hour. 2. They are both accident prone. If there is anything standing one of them will surely knock it over. If there are any liquids of any kind in any container, they will spill it. If they get muddy feet (and they will even in a drought) it is bound to get all over me as well. This brings me to my third point. 3. They have an uncanny ability to get dirty, I mean really dirty. We like to take walks in the woods behind the house. After about thirty minutes of walking they both look like the ball end of a sewer tape. If there is a mud puddle within 1/2 mile in any direction they will seek it out and jump in it. I'm serious. 4. They are both very smart and like to talk back. We don't let Beau in our office there are to many cords for him to chew. When he comes to the office door and we tell him to stay outside of the door. He sits there and barks until I finally pick him up and take him away. Christy, Bradyn's mom was scolding Bradyn for whining. Bradyn responded by asking for a new mommy. Christy said "fine there's a house I'll bet you can find a new mommy there." Bradyn looked at the house and replied "if I'm going to get a new mommy I want one with a bigger house." There are a lot of other ways they share things in common but these are the ones that stand out most to me. Oh yeah, I forget the most important one of all. 5. They both like to be loved and petted and that is where I enter the picture.

A "French" Wedding

We recently photographed a wedding in Greensboro with a French theme. The wedding ceremony was at United Tabernacle Church and the reception was held at the Proximity Hotel. The bride and groom, Connie Post and Billy Benton, chose a french theme because the bride loves France, in fact, that is where they are honeymooning!

Connie was so relaxed and smiling the whole time and why not, she was getting married!

The coordinator, Kristine Kokoski with Planned to Perfection and her assistant Joy, did a fabulous job and it WAS planned to perfection. The staff at Proximity did a great job too.

The cake, a strawberry cream by Maxie B's was not only spectacular but was absolutely delicious, as always.

!

Look at those eyes! ( one of Connie's grands)

Connie said she has waited 17 years for the right man; looks like she has found him!

Connie and Billy, we wish you the very best and thank you for the honor of documenting your wedding day.
